Freetown, Sierra Leone – November 26, 2023 – The government of Sierra Leone has declared a nationwide curfew following an attempted attack on the Wilberforce military barracks in the capital, Freetown.
In a statement released early Sunday morning, President Julius Maada Bio confirmed the attempted attack and said that the situation was under control. He also announced a nationwide curfew from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., effective immediately.
“The government is taking this measure to ensure the safety and security of all Sierra Leoneans,” the statement said. “We urge all citizens to remain calm and cooperate with the security forces.”
The motive for the attempted attack is unclear, but it comes amid growing tensions in Sierra Leone. The country has been struggling with an economic crisis and rising inflation, which has led to protests and demonstrations.
The curfew is expected to remain in place for the foreseeable future.
